When Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Olena Dmytrychenko’s world was turned upside down. “I couldn’t believe it was real,” she says. “My country was brutally invaded, leaving behind destroyed cities and thousands of innocent victims.”

Her daughter, Diana Dmytrychenko, who was living in Colorado, called constantly in distress. “She kept begging me to leave Ukraine immediately,” Olena recalls. But leaving was not simple. “At first, it seemed impossible — I was not alone, as I had adopted two dogs.”

Through what she calls “a fortunate turn of events” and with her daughter’s help, Olena managed to escape. She packed her entire life into one small suitcase and set out with her two loyal four-legged friends. “Together, we spent a month traveling through Europe and then five months in Mexico, waiting for the dogs’ vaccinations to be accepted before we could finally reach our destination — America… I am deeply grateful to all the kind people who helped us along the way.”

Once she arrived in Denver, Olena already knew where she wanted to go. “I learned about Emily Griffith Technical College long ago from my daughter, Diana, who successfully completed several programs here. As soon as I arrived, we went to enroll in English classes.”

Her goal was clear. “When my English level became high enough, I immediately joined the Massage Therapy program,” she says. “I chose this program because I already had some experience in this field back in Ukraine, but most importantly, I truly love this profession. It is my calling — to help people become healthier, more balanced, and wellbeing.”

Olena will complete the program this December. “My learning experience has been incredibly supportive and inspiring thanks to my teachers, mentors, tutors, and of course, the generous financial aid programs. Without that support, my educational journey might not have been possible.”

Her plans for the future are as hopeful as her spirit. “After receiving my license, I plan to open my own business called “Healing Hub”, offering a holistic approach to clients through various massage methods and cultural traditions,” she says. “My dream is to be of service to people, contribute to the community, and earn a fair income that will allow me to continue learning, improving my skills, and growing my business.”

Financial assistance has played a crucial role in that dream. “During my studies, I received a monthly scholarship, and both semesters of my program were funded by donor-supported foundations,” Olena explains. “This generous assistance made my dream of receiving an education in America come true and supported me throughout my journey.”

Her gratitude runs deep. “To all the donors, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your kindness and generosity. You make it possible for people like me to follow our dreams and create a new beginning in this wonderful country.”

What she loves most about Emily Griffith, though, goes beyond academics. “Although I haven’t studied at other institutions, what I love most about Emily Griffith is the sense of belonging — here you become part of a caring, supportive, and welcoming community,” she says. “Everyone is genuine, kind, and always ready to help. There are also so many opportunities for extra learning, community events, and celebrations where we share our experiences, cultures, talents, and of course, delicious food!”

And for anyone still deciding where to study? Olena doesn’t hesitate. “If you are still faced with the choice of where to go to study, I highly recommend Emily Griffith Technical College!”
