For Isac Carrillo-Bravo, Emily Griffith Technical College has always been a familiar fixture in his hometown of Denver, Colorado. His connection to the school runs deep through his family, as his mother earned her GED there, and he frequently noticed the school tabling at local resource fairs.
"Safe to say that when I was searching for a multimedia and video production course," Carrillo-Bravo notes, "This school was within my top selection." Now enrolled in the Multimedia and Video Production program, he is utilizing his technical education to fulfill what he feels is his true calling in life.
As a first-generation college graduate, his unique personal path and his cultural identity heavily shape his artistic vision. "My background includes being a first generation college graduate," he explains. "My experience as a Mexican- American living in this country led me to choose this program." His previous professional experiences in social work also play a massive role in how he views human narratives. "I have a background in social work and I am constantly hearing other peoples stories, therefore I can shape my own ideas and concepts on life and journeys of life," Carrillo-Bravo says.
For him, the MVP curriculum acts as the ultimate toolkit to bring those observations to light. "This program has given me the tools to be able to tell my story whether it be selecting frames of a shot to convey a certain meaning or selecting a song to go with my documentaries," he shares. "Being able to tell my story has always been important to me as I believe humans share a lot of the same stories and we are not going through things on our own." The technical fundamentals learned in the classroom have allowed him to step fully into his creative potential. "This program gives life to my vision by tapping my toes into what is possible and gives me the fundamentals to elevate my projects," Carrillo-Bravo says. "I believe my purpose in life is to storytell. With the focus of bringing people together. Therefore, I believe this is only the start of my journey to impact the life of others."
Carrillo-Bravo is on track to complete the program in July. Once he finishes his studies, his goals are entirely focused on artistic integrity and community impact rather than financial gain. "Continue working on my personal projects, generate a following and give back to my community," he notes. "Perfecting my craft by practicing and not stopping to create. At this point I am in it for creative freedom and not money."
Committing fully to this creative coursework was made possible through crucial scholarship opportunities provided by the school. "Emily Griffith was able to support me through my education journey which helped me focus on my studies," he says. "I am thankful to be granted the opportunity to receive scholarships." This financial aid removed a massive layer of stress, allowing him to treat the classroom as his primary focus. "Financial support allowed me to not worry about the financial burden of having to deal with payment plans," Carrillo-Bravo explains. "Instead it granted me to apply myself fully into the classroom, which I am grateful for." He notes that this holistic level of care is a defining trait of the entire institution, stating that "Emily Griffith is in a category of its own when it comes to the support system it offers. From Financial assistance to instructors and even the security team. Everyone is willing to help in any small or large way."
For individuals considering a contribution to Emily Griffith Foundation, Carrillo-Bravo looks at donor generosity through the lens of long-term community impact. "Their donation would be an investment into someone's education," Carrillo-Bravo emphasizes. "Which can later in life be a reinvestment as an act of a full circle moment. I am a strong believer of what comes around, goes around. Therefore the good deeds will be returned."
