Evette Gilbert grew up in Colorado, and she speaks about it with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly where she stands. “I was born and raised right here in Colorado,” she says, and that sense of rootedness carries into everything she does at Emily Griffith Technical College.
Gilbert first walked the halls of the school years ago as part of her high school experience. Coming back was not a leap. It was a return. “I actually attended Emily Griffith years ago during part of my high school experience, so when I decided to pursue barbering, coming back felt like returning home.”
Now she is deep into the Barbering program, surrounded by clippers, combs, and the steady rhythm of students learning a craft that demands both precision and heart. For Gilbert, the draw was clear. “I’ve always been a creative, hands-on person, and I love helping people feel confident,” she says. Barbering checked every box. “I chose this program because I want a career where I can build something of my own, create a welcoming environment for all people, and use my talent to uplift my community. Barbering allows me to do exactly that.”
She is on track to complete the program on January 22, 2026, and she already has a vision marked in permanent ink. “Once I graduate, I plan to open my own barber salon studio, a space that blends professional grooming, creativity, and a comfortable environment for clients from all backgrounds.”
Getting here has taken determination, long days, and the kind of financial support that removes barriers instead of building them. Gilbert received scholarships through Emily Griffith, including support made possible by the Prosperity Denver Fund, one of the Foundation’s key partners in expanding educational access. “Financial support has made a huge difference,” she says. “It has allowed me to stay focused on my education instead of stressing over tuition and the fear of falling behind. It truly helped keep me moving forward toward my goals.”
She chose Emily Griffith not only for its programs but for its culture. “I chose Emily Griffith because of its reputation, supportive instructors, and the way the school genuinely invests in students’ success. My past experience here made it an easy decision to return.” She adds that what sets the school apart is simple but powerful. “Emily Griffith offers hands-on training, real-world experience, and a supportive community that genuinely wants students to succeed. It feels personal here, not just educational.”
Gilbert has a message for anyone considering donating to the Emily Griffith Foundation, which helps fund scholarships like the one that supported her. “I would tell them their generosity changes lives. Even small amounts of support can give a student hope, relieve financial stress, and open the door to a career that can completely transform their future. Donors are investing in real people, real dreams, and real success stories.”
As she moves closer to graduation, Gilbert carries a mix of gratitude and drive. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a student here and for everyone who has helped me along the way. This program is helping me build a career I’m proud of.”
